leila grace

i can sit for hours and pour over old family photographs imagining all the stories that one image can hold.

well,  a while back my aunt gave me this old rusty bread box...i had no idea the treasures it contained. there were letters -many letters, some even dating back to the late 1800s, old photographs and newspaper clippings. this was the keepsake box of my paternal great-grandmother.  apparently my grandmother salvaged the box from the trash after she died. thank goodness! in this photograph is the lovely lady i never knew... leila grace....she was quite a lady. i think this photograph is just marvelous. i wish i had taken it. she was born in 1879 and died in 1963. the photo was taken in california at her daughter's home in 1954.

Looks like stucco. You know photography. Tell me, why are the roses in color but everything else is black and white?

Boy, do I remember going over to her house I was 9 or 10 years old. She made this wonderful egg custard in little cups. I wish I had spent more time with her, not just for more custard but to ask her about her life stories. As I sit here and write this I can look over my computer screen and see at a photo of my dad (her son) and his grandfather (her father in law). The stories she could have told of a simpler life in West Texas.
